Market Recap & Insights Heading into September 2024

This week our focus turns to the month of September which has presented seasonal challenges in the past, especially in recent years.

While September's historical data is hard to ignore, it is important to note the strong market recovery as August closed last Friday. Long-term investors saw significant early losses erased with the S&P 500 losing as much as 7.3% before recovering. The Dow and Nasdaq were down as much as 5.4% and 10.7%, respectively, at their lows this past month. Investors will be looking to see whether recent momentum can override seasonal concerns in September.

August 2024 Recap - Markets Recover from Early Sell-off

The U.S. stock market finished a turbulent month on a positive note after the major averages suffered a steep sell-off culminating on August 5th. You may remember this heavy bout of selling led Wall Street to its worst day in nearly two years. Despite the early volatility in August, major averages were able to recover and close in positive territory as the market rally showed signs of broadening.
